Fulci steps it up a notch or two here from City of the Living Dead, this being the 2nd film in the ‘Gates of Hell’ trilogy. Not really a continuation of the story persay, just a different chapter from the same kind of book. Some more weird deaths and gore. A little more Lovecraftian than the first one that basically just used the town name of Dunwich. And pretty on point with the prophets of dooooom and its chuntpunching of Hellholes into our worrrrlllldddd!!!
Nice sepia-toned intro to set the story up in rural Louisiana 1927 culminating at a hotel. This book of Eibon that’s presented seems to be the Necronomicon’s older twin. And Nothing good comes of it! A little informational, but sheeeit, The 7 Gateways prophecy-ish thingamajig seems a bit silly at first but, well, there does seem to be a series of rather unfortunate events befalling Liza, who in 1981 has recently inherited an old forlorn Hotel, looks like that very same old one from the sepia-toned beginnings. Last Chance Hotel for her, so despite the numerous injuries, deaths, warnings from weird rhuemy-eyed blind chicks, and flat-out attacks on her brainwaves with visions and… whatever they are...Yeah, that Hotel is some baaad news.
I will devote this part of the review itself to the most stunning and ridiculous scene of the movie. While there are many other scenes of mediocre to rather decent shocks of gore and horror, there is one scene in particular that is perfectly well done but also ludicrously played out. Well, thinking back on the whole film, I might maybe need to be more specific. It’s the one involving some hairy little bastards. You know, or you’ll see. But Why the eyes? Why?!? And the mouth kicker! Overall though, pretty ok horror flick with an intriguing ending. Even with...the creeping death!
