VIDEO REVIEW

No spoilers here, I’ll say that right up front. I shy away from them for the majority of the reviews I do, unless it’s utter dreck, in which case you can appreciate the key crappy plot points as necessary in order to truly scoff at the retardations. This one is not shite. Maybe a little too clever for its own good, in a meta (aka cleverly self-referential) kinda way. But still a fun romp anyways.

This movie does not start off normal. Well, maybe it does, in the strictest sense. Just two guys at work, shootin the shit, getting their coffee before start of shift in a very underground-ish kind of bunker place. Then we are introduced to some college kids (I use that term a bit loosely here), ready for a weekend getaway that ends up at a cabin that looks like it’s out of The Evil Dead. Why do all the cabins in the woods look like they’re from The Evil Dead? Even that one in O Brother, Where Art Thou? looked like the cabin from The Evil Dead. Weird. Anyways, the story afterwards basically alternates between the two. It’s...dammitall. It’s...fucked up. I’ll leave the synopsis at that.

If you like the style of the movie, you’ll probably want to watch it twice to understand the full context. There’s plenty of horror and decent splashes of gore, and literally all the tropes that come with that. From Alien Beasts to Werewolves to Zombies, it’s all kinda covered here, and usually with some snappy dialogue. Joss Whedon of Buffy/Firefly/Serenity fame has partial Writer credits here, so that may give you a clue as to the tone in which it’s presented. Both dark and amusing, and has some good roles by all involved. If you are a true fan of the horror genre, you will appreciate the shit out of this. It’s fun. A bunch of fatalistic claptrap, but fun.

Great Scene: The betting board. What is that? You’ll see.

Great Quotes: “Am I on speaker phone?”
