An Early Film by the guy that brought us both Porky’s AND A Christmas Story. This is part of his humble beginnings in the genre of Horror.
Some theater pups accompany their Director and obvious Benefactor to an island to perform a unique performance, apparently. An old grimoire is involved, and a graveyard of the city rejects on this isolated island off the shore. Alan, the director? Definitely a douchenozzle. But he’s payin the bills so everybody has to go along with his overly dramatic theatrics. Does it go bad? Yeah, it goes bad.
Obviously low budget here but shot okay all things considered. It’s kind of a precursor to Sam Raimi’s first Evil Dead a few years later. The actors are all generally good in their roles, script is passable for what it needs so be, even with the gay ghouls. And it doesn’t play out exactly like you think it would. Mostly, but not always. “Night of the Living Evil Dead” with theater actors. Yeah. That’s kinda the gist here. some ok practical makeup, but overall a bit darkly shot (it is over the course of a night on an island), and not really any major gore involved. The gay necrophilia vibe does make it a bit creepier though.
