One of the few actual family-friendly films reviewed here on the DMR, even if it’s British. Aardman Studios doing a lovely bit here once again, giving us Wallace and Gromit in feature length form. Nick Park’s creation here takes on a new story with some classic horror movie tropes that are both fun and hilarious, even without the beers. But the beers does help. And whiskey. Beers just make it funner.
Starting out in true not quite Rube Goldberg gadget fashion that Wallace loves to build, he and his beloved pet and companion dog Gromit are the kings of vegetable protection in a small English town with their company Anti-Pesto (heh!). Especially appreciated as the annual Giant Vegetable Competition is just days away. But in true Wallace fashion, his attempt to make bunny control better through his gadgetry goes woefully awry. And his new acquaintance Lady Tottington gives him a strange bulge in his pants that may or may not be a carrot. I couldn’t make this review at least a little naughty. Just didn’t seem right.
This is a simple story but fantastic stop-motion animation execution of were-beast mythology. Plenty of awesome character expressions and visual gags help make the film amusing and a true pleasure to watch. I can’t always watch John Carpenter’s The Thing on Halloween, gotta mix it up a little. This is the perfect cocktail for some nice clean entertainment that is like a refreshing mint julep. I guess. I never actually drank a mint julep so don’t really know for sure. But they do look refreshing. In the meantime, can’t go wrong with this one for a downright amusing ride full of utter Cheesiness. And vegetables.
