VIDEO REVIEW

I kinda forgot about this movie. With Raimi taking on the Spider-Man franchise, I just kind of drifted away. Did I watch them? Yeah, and I will lie to myself to say it was only for the Bruce Campbell cameos. But with each one, it was less and less “Raimi-esque”. Now, I’m not saying Army of Darkness was a masterpiece. But it at least still had some cool shots and camera moves and stupid-comedy moments. This one? Any Chump coulda made this movie. Maybe even a Shemp.

Opening, Pasadena CA 1969. Some evil shit goes down. Kid with the light fingers? Damn, seems like a bad way to go. Some years later, Christine Brown is a local low level bank person (BOOORRING), looking at that open assistant manager position (BOOOORING_ERRRRR). Her recently professor’d boyfriend seems like a good match. But then an old gypsy woman gets involved, curses and handkerchiefs and shadowy shenanigans soon follow. It is...a somewhat mediocre ride.

Overall it’s pretty formulaic. Written by Sam and his brother Ivan, it’s not subtle. Sure, there’s a curveball here and there for how you think it may zig and then it kinda zags. But ultimately pretty inconsequential. Heavy Stephen King “Thinner” vibes, but a lot eviler. Seriously, the punishment does seem a bit excessive, all things considered. This comes complete with pretty generic CGI and forgettable plot. Maybe about 5 good minutes toward the end in a diner when consequences are actually considered. Beyond that, kinda surprised they gave Raimi a Doctor Strange movie, that Oz one he made after this which I never watched must’ve at least looked really good!

Product of a Gypsy Curse: This movie. And Malort.

Yellow Oldsmobuick Sighting: Yes.

Bruce Campbell Cameo: No, Sadly. Would have made the film like, 10% better. Maybe even 15%, depending on the role.
