VIDEO REVIEW

War movies are always a kick to the head. This one? Punch, then a kick, then a good stomp. It ain’t pretty. World War Two, US tank divisions against superior German tank divisions, in the heart of Krautland near the end. It goes...about how you’d expect.

This is an ugly film shot in various tones of browns, greys and muted greens, and appropriately so. War is never pretty, especially when shot up this close. The crew of the tank named “Fury” is hardened to a point of inhumanity. Almost. Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Pitt) keeps his crew somewhat grounded despite the constant horrors. For Three Fuckin Years. The new guy added in for perspective, to best show the dynamics of the other four guys in their tank. Their home. Their shitshow.

This is a hard movie, but well done. Pitt does a great job as the whatever rank he is, it doesn’t matter, every soldier he meets knows he’s King Shit, he gets the job done. His crew are all pretty well portrayed too, even Shia LaBeouf does a good job here. Saving Private Ryan set a pretty high bar for visceral WWII movies. This one is smaller in scope, but still pretty powerful. The best and worst aspects of what these guys went through. Damn.

Great Scene: Conversation about if Hitler would fuck you for a chocolate bar. All laughs, shows the demented headspaces of the crew perfectly.

Great Quote: “May as well get a little tight. Ain’t gonna be around for the hangover.”
