Fuckin Hell, this one’s a doozy. Fortunately I went into this one originally knowing absolutely nothing for maximum impact, I recommend you do the same. A family drama after the loss of grandma, it has some weirdities going on and it’s like sad and all but then Pow! It goes a whole different direction from there.
A family of four is experiencing grief after the loss of Annie’s mother. Annie had some issues with her mom, not exactly sad to see her go. But there’s some dark family history lurking beneath the surface, some certifiable craziness involved. But now, just a family grieving, especially the young daughter Charlie, who was closer to grandma than the rest. But circumstances rather quickly remove that grief, among other things. The son Peter doesn’t take that very well. And Annie’s descent into new levels of grief has some devastating effects on the rest of the family.
Gotta say, this is one of the few truly creepy movies I’ve seen in a long time, has stuck with me since first seeing it. It’s got a slow-burn Rosemary’s Baby vibe going on, but ratchets it up quite a bit. There’s some freakishness added on tragedy and a family history of schizophrenia and shit so the the psychological impact is heavy. But things aren’t always just in one’s head. Toni Collette does a good job as the grieving mother, and Alex Wolff as the son is convincing at he deteriorates mentally. This one’s very dark, and sticks to your brain like pudding. I don’t recommend eating anything while watching it. Especially nuts. Or pigeon heads. I don’t plan on revisiting this one again for awhile. Probably wouldn’t have watched again so soon since last time but wanted a good banger to end out October here. Damn. It’s hard to scrape that pudding off the brain.
