Is Michael Caine the uncle of Christopher Nolan or something? He’s like the Dominic Pinion of Jean-Pierre Jeunet movies. But that’s cool. He does his job well here as a...well...I really can’t say. Because that would kind of ruin it. Aw shit, alright, it ain’t really a spoiler, he’s a scientist. Like in Inception and The Prestige and The Batmans and Tenet, but different. I kind of billed this as a Time Travel movie for the current DMR theme. Technically it is, as we travel every day, you and me, through time. It’s the skipping through that’s the hard part.
Future Earth. Things ain’t goin so well. Basically Dust Bowl 2.0, but worse. Local Astronaut-turned-Farmer is not exactly happy with how the way shit’s going, along with everyone else. But not much choice. His family depends on him. There’s a weird subplot about ghosts, but we all know now that’s just Bruce Willis. He doesn’t psychoanalyze nobody here, so the Ghostbusters don’t have to get involved. But there is some crazy space shit and one funny robot. The other robot is serious. It’s a good balance.
This movie is a journey, both story-wise and duration, so plan accordingly. Starts out a bit shaky given the premise, but it steps up pretty well. Sure, there’s some dramatic musics to manipulate you along with the dramas. But space drama is still the best drama. Because it’s space. And robots. Matthew McConaughey does a good job here. All secondary characters are mostly good, even Topher Grace. Nolan does a great job here balancing the serious, the tension, the robot humor and the visuals. Nothin like surfin that giant wave or an event horizon. That’s...some 5-D chess kinda shit there. Spectacular. It might be a bit sappy at times, but a nice syrupy sappy, so throw that on yer pamcakes and enjoy.
