I guess I was a little surprised after seeing the Playas in this film and not really recognizing the movie itself. But then I looked at when it came out. While the 20-Aughts weren’t the WORST decade for film, it was a pretty dark 10 years of releases, and I guess this was the candled crown on the crapper cake. Yeah. I’ll even give is A Rob Zombie Yeah ™.
Even in the small roles, I dig what Jeffrey Dean Morgan brings to his characters. Zoe Saldana is just Zoe Saldana here without the green make-up. Idris Alba is always solid as the British Black Guy doing American (thank you, The Wire). Chris Evans before he blew up, I guess? Will he forever be Captain American before he gave up his shield to a dude that literally had no super-powers? Odd judgment call there. Maybe they gave the dude superpowers in the next movie but that was the final nail in that sinking coffin for me. But at least Evans is the comic relief here. Kinda. Because all proper action movies need something to laugh at besides the plot.
Is this comically bad? Eh. I dunno. It is based on a comic, with that classic A-Team story of besmirched valor with hopes to regain their reputations, with a whole bunch of ridiculous mini-missions playing out in order to achieve their Goal. There’s a Bad Guy that you absolutely know he’s Bad. I can tell these things just by watching what he does, and yeah, he’s is whacky wild evil, but, you know, seriously so. And the Big Threat is...a shit plot thing. Jeebus. It’s eye-rolling. But that’s what macguffins are great for, let the actions and other stuff play out while you, the viewer, hit that 8th beer and wonder if a 9th is warranted. In this case? Yes. It is most definitely warranted.
