VIDEO REVIEW NOW PLAYING POSTER

I don’t know what fates conspired against me on getting this review done. I tried once back in 2005. Maybe got too drunks. It...happens. Time passes. It’s on The List, I gots to do it, plus it’s one of my bro’s favorite films to boot. So, to the now, DMR Prep for the eve, beer-and-shot buzz goin, and then some shit happens. Not here, but some other shit. Stymied again! But back on that horse, 3 days later. Prep, buzz, 5 minutes into the film, Storm knocks out the Electricity. Are you Shittin’ me?!? But power came back shortly after, and this is how it plays out…

New York City. All the big Gangs are being called for a Big Meeting. Cyrus, he’s trying to unite all the factions, knows strength in numbers, gangs vs cops. And he has the voice and reputation to maybe actually pull it off, and with a truce being called with no weapons or ass-hattery attitudes, 9 members of each gang get to go represent, listen, see if they are good with it. The Warriors, all the way out in Coney Island, never even been down to the Bronx before. But worth checkin it out. And it’s an interesting concept, as more gang members consider it. And maybe even dig it. Then shit goes sideways, cops, chaos, and the Warriors get A-Teamed while having no weapons or train tokens to get back home, and are pretty much be hunted by every gang in the city. It makes for...a long night.

Widening the view, this actually has a heavy Greek mythologies influence in the names and the overall story and journey-arc. It comes off more as an adventure kind of story, as the Warriors try to make their way back home. It’s gritty, not everybody makes it back to the Wonder Wheel. And a nice scene on the train where beat up gang members face normies who are on their way home after a wedding, the reactions of each where their two totally different worlds intersect. As exaggerated as the plot is, great scene to ground it back into reality. Pretty good storytelling here by director Walter Hill, an interesting mix of New York gangs just doing their thing bippin and boppin to their trials and tribulations. And they even almost get laid. Well, some of em, anyhows. And yeah, maybe not. Those Lizzies seem like they might be...vagitarians?

Great Quotes : One is about digging, the other involves clinking bottles and an awesome character by David Patrick Kelly. Almost ominous, the way that sound carries. But also terrifying, because it is the sound of Empty Beers. That makes this is a tragedy too, I reckon.

Music Notes: Pretty cool score of electro Funk has a good vibe and energy to it, interspersed with some Radio Tunes by the all-knowing DJ. Plus a good track by Joe Walsh(!) to close it. Well, good for 1979 and that part of the movie. Listening to it again now, with older ears and other tastes in guitar rock? I can say...it Still works for the movie as the credits roll.

Videogame Notes: Inspired 2 of em! I still got the PS2 one on disc. Too bad my PS3 died a long time ago, I usually just used it to play blu-ray discs, good luck getting a replacement for it nowadays. Wonder if I can get that into an emulator? It was actually a cool, well-done game, from what I remember. (totally got it into an emulator, and it does kick ass)
