VIDEO REVIEW

Hey, DMR, what the hell is this? Okay, stop me if you’ve heard this before (which is ridiculous because you’re absorbing this and I’ve long-since been done with the review and has moved on, so interaction call-out is merely rhetorical). Anyways, You find yourself aimlessly wandering the Blockbuster aisles for an hour, still not sure what to pick from the rows and rows of VHSs. In current parlance, it is known as Netflix doomscrolling. What to watch, what to watch? But for me, I got 4 new releases on the Library shelf, beggars can’t be choosers. Sci-Fi cover that’s okay. Stars Jesse Pinkman. Fuckit, let’s go!

An amnesiatic chick wakes up in complete disarray. Some gruesome quick flashbacks indicate some pretty horrific and gory happenings. Systems are putting out a lot of warnings. She somehow remembers to turn the air back on, in what may be a space ship, may be a colony house on some distant planet. Spacechick Riya starts investigating the aftermath of blood trails and bodies, starts to realize the knife she pulled out of that dead body back there isn’t going to be much for protections. At least there’s some opium patches, apparently. Those might be okay. In limited doses, of course. Plus there is Space Jesse Pinkman.

Not saying this is complete trash. There’s flashes of Event Horizon here, even a splash of Solaris. Sheeit, it builds up to.. .some other well-known horror properties, I’ll leave it at that. Kinda evil and cool with the visuals, but...storywise...it’s just kinda GirlBoss Survival. Purposely disjointed to create additional mystery, a bit lazy in that regard. And the layers of drama are a bit...shallow. Love lost, slowly revealed memories of the past, etc etc. Production values are fine, definitely a lot of CGI. It does its best to build up some suspense, it’s just is a little too derivative and, well, more moody and atmospheric than anything else.

Great Scene: There is a pretty cool visual look into the evilness here. A bit Lovecraftian maybe? I am a sucker for a bit Lovecraftian, sue me. Director Flying Lotus is known more for his music I guess, and some film scores. Definitely a heavy John Carpenter influence here in both presentation and film score, which he also did.

Story Notes: This is kind of another chapter in the latest Pessimistic BlackPill Lifeview genre that seems to demoralize instead of inspire, with the strong feel of a Netflix Original movie. I dunno, I don’t want to sound like sexisms or nothin but there’s some physical fights here. As speculative fictiony as the plot is, would have been more believable with a guy fighting, at least in these scenarios. Which are a few.
