VIDEO REVIEW

This is a big action-packed extravaganza, set in like 1850? Fortunately for us all, it is no Wild Wild West. I saw that one once like 30 year ago and I still remember the suckitude that was. This one is better, at least it has some kinda decent characters. It ain’t the best, but it’s a fun western sci-fi popcorn movie that doesn’t involve a large mechanical spider and a shit rap song.

An Amnesiac cowboy wakes up in the canyons, hurt and with a weird bracelet on his wrist. Happened upon by some outlaw-types. Things go wrong for certain parties. Somewhere else, there’s some cattle hands takin a bean break by the campfire. Things go wrong in a weird blammy kinda way. The local municipality has its issues, a gold town dried up. There’s cowboys. There’s Indians. There’s aliens. It’s gets a little crazy.

This is not the greatest of movies, but good enough for all the characters and plotlines and shootins and blowins up. The story is ok, gets some good emotional points throughout, even if a bit cheese. But as mentioned earlier, the western sci-fi genre can be a rough one to manage, and Iron Man director Jon Favreau does good here with the big action pieces and very occasional humor thrown in, but actually appreciated to not make it campy. Daniel Craig is so serious here, Harrison Ford, Keith Carradine, Olivia Wilde, Walton Goggins and a nice little turn by Sam Rockwell. Who are all overshadowed by the awesomeness of Clancy Fkn Brown. Cool landscapes. Nice Sworn Enemies teaming up to fight an even sworner enemy kinda tale.

Great Scene: Doin Drugs with Drumbeats by the campfire, it’s like an 1850s rave in here!

Media Notes: Apparently I watched the theatrical version, there’s an extended cut about 15 minutes longer. Kinda mixed feelings which way to go for that, I don’t really intend to sit through again any time soon just to see what I missed. Not like I don’t know how it ends. It probably could use a little extra character development, so I guess that might be a lot of what I missed.
