I will start this off reporting that, despite living in the water, fish-creature-men still be thirsty. And crafty. Though, crafty in the water does come with a lot of time in the water and this man-shaped gill creature has done spent some time in the water. Unbeknownst to SS Rita, cruisin down the Amazon, apparently.
An exploratory scientific team on the Amazon river make an amazing discovery in their rock digs. Is it a hand? Is it a fish hand? Is it a fish shaped like a hand? What could it be?!? Lead scientist motorboats on to the local Institute of Marine Bologna or somesuch and gets himself a nice water-sammich while reporting his findings. Giving the example of a retarded fish somehow secures funding from a Scientifically Questionable Dude to requistition an even-more questionable dingy to go back down the Amazon river to explore its origins. Either fortunately or unfortunately for them all, they bring a hot little minx with them on the voyage, and it turns out swimming in unknown untracked unmapped Amazonian rivers can result in an infestation of river ticks, water chiggers, mudrat anteaters and/or agua jaguars. And, possibly, thirsty fish-man-creatures.
I fully intended to watch this in 3D, as intended as it was originally shot that way. But my TV isn’t smart enough. And trying to find a legit anaglyph (aka “red and blue”) version of this to watch it right is unfortunately damn near obsolete. Shame. I remember as a kid having to go down to the local 7-11 to buy a Slurpee and get “free” glasses so I could watch it on the on the Son of Svangoolie Saturday night event. I don’t remember the movie itself much, but I did note his particular disdain for Berwin. Regardless, the science/mystery/fishhunt story surrounding a pretty brunette in an ugly bikini is decent enough. Just like Frankenstein though, the monster? Despite lashing out at the natives and the boatswains, they really were just invading his domicile without an invitation, and was treated unjustly for it. Shame, really. Dude really did have a cool fish-man cave.
