VIDEO REVIEW

This one’s an odd one. It’s kinda cool visually, but more than a bit on the drama side, with some deeper level introspections on life and death and the circle of treeisms. Some yoga and animal experiments are thrown in for good measure. Dress it any way you like, it’s still a love story that’s a bit sappy. Both literally and figuratively or realistically or metaphorically or simile-ish or rhymey or I dunno. Two of those descriptors might be right.

There’s a conquistador dude that is pretty bad-ass. He think he can just Indiana Jones the fuck outta whatever he come up against. Because he can. Superior metallurgy of weapons and armor and such, but Overwhelming numbers do present a bit of a problem to that, though. Hugh Jackman does good with lookin gnarly and fightin. At least for a bit, because then, you know, overwhelming numbers. Rachel Weisz is the Queen of Spain. Cool. Dig it. Then there’s the rest of the movie about Thems Two, but sadder. Then a little nicer. But mostly sadder. Because Aronofsky is a weird dude. The non-linear story-telling here is a plus though, as it makes the dramatics at least a little more interesting.

Discordant kinda-flashbacks of a space-monk are cool and all, but it does get a little droll after awhile when it’s like the echo of three of the same story. I be jokin a little bit there, but there is some legitimacy in the fact we see so many similar legends or myths across multiple civilizations and time periods. There is at least something that ties us all together in a fleeting way, apparently. In the meantime, maybe this is an ok kinda date movie that doesn’t follow the standard template. But there is a bit of death involved. But I guess I didn’t expect anything else from the guy that brought us Pi and Requiem for a Dream previously. But even at only 93 minutes, it still has ya checkin the clock to see when it kinda wraps it up. For me, at least. Because I am apparently dead inside. Unless it involves robots to keep it interesting. Or bewbs. No robots and/or bewbs here. Sad. Well, Sadder.

Great Scene: Those fuckin Mayans knew how to build their shit.

Bad-Ass Villainry: There’s an Inquisition guy that, yeah, he’s a real Shitbag Savage.
