VIDEO REVIEW

This sci-fi is kinda one of those arthouse sci-fis? Sure it has some of the sciency stuff it wraps itself in, but that’s just the fancy tortilla around the taco-meat drama. This ain’t no Plan 9 From Outta Space shenanigans. This is pure seriousness! Especially since it’s FUTURE seriousness. Where they still have piss tests, apparently. Fkn hell.

Young Vincent, born a natural birth which dooms him to a weird substandard class, considering it is the future and now babies are genetically manipulated to take out all those pesky dying and disease and bad-sight genes. Sheeit, some dude even gots 12 fingers! Piano playin won’t be the same. Well, until the guy with 13 fingers comes along. But shit, yeah, the plots, dreams of astronauting, but not having the right piss to make it. Allegedly. Black markets really DO cater in everything, don’t they? You need a toe? I can get you a toe. Not personally, but I might know a guy who knows a guy who saw the Big Lebowski. Anyways, yeah, thoughts on Spaceflyins (theoretically) and drama.

While the bro subplot is a little heavy-handed, it does help some of the overall themes of the story quite nicely. A decent take on “genosisms”, which is obviously the raystists versions of genetics raystisms. Uh. Valids vs In-Valids, De-Gene-erates. So many future slurs bandied about, it really worked me into quite the FutureeEEeemas. Ethan Hawke is pretty solid here as well as Jude Law, both giving some decent nuance to what is kind of a stretch for tangents of theories, but hey, it’s done right, paced fairly well, throws a little Future Investigations into the matter to wratchet up the tensions, too. And of course, the love interest to throw another wrench into the DNA works.

Great Scene: Been awhile since I watched it, the swimming thing is... a good hook.
