VIDEO REVIEW

With a name like a wine, how can you go wrong? Unless you’re Mad Dog 20/20 or Night Train, then that will always go wrong. Always. But here is a much less regrettable choice, at least to watch. It’s a stage play converted to film by the very same writer David Mamet. He’s got some solid cred. Not exactly a barn-burner of a movie, just characters and dialogue. Intriguing. What is this “dialogue” in which you speak of, and why does it not star any butts?

Real Estate salesmen, grinding it out. It’s not glamorous. And it’s not easy, either. This is a look into the personality types, the pressures, and the fuckin shitshow that it is to be a salesman.

Pretty decent pressure-cooker kind of story, even if it’s just a few real estate salesmen in a shabby office just trying to pay the bills, trying to make their cut of the sales, with what may be suspect help from the head office they work for. Is it bad leads or are they bad salesmen? A load of good actors, plus Alec Baldwin (who, admittedly, does actually put in a short good performance here. Fuckin steak knives, man). Do people even go to plays anymore? Think about it. Like 2 hours of drama, no cuts. No do-overs. All Fuckin Live. Multiple takes on film? That shit’s white bread. This is like coffee, and coffee’s for closers.

Great Dialogue Notes: That’s what this movie is, and plenty of great observations and lines spread throughout. It’s like one of those old 50s Talky movies because all they got is like 3 sets and some film to shoot. They put it to good use here.

Salesman Award: Of the salesmen here, Pacino does a great job in the role. Good person or great salesman? Well played. But some great character roles by Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, and yes, even that Baldwin guy. Stopped clock gets its due, too.
