This is a kinda tangential part of the whole Marvel Universe thing, back when it was an outlier. OutLyer? Not really directly involved, we’ll put it that way, at least when it came out. So as a stand-alone sci-fi action adventure popcorn flick? It’s got the right parts, the decent character developments, the plenties of actions and good humor worked in. It is a fun flick.
Young Peter Quill, earth-boy in 1988. The worst of situations with a dying mom. And all he’s left with is remorse and a Sony Walkman with his mom’s favorite mix-tape she made him. Then, he gets abducted by space pirates. 26 years later, he’s a space pirate. Makes sense. Unfortunately for him, he gets a little too caught up in piratey dealings. And maybe a couple space whooores. But mostly space-piratey kinda shit. His latest booty ends up being a bit hotter than most treasures, and his somewhat bungly handling of the situations allow him to carry on and pirate another day. Really a lot like Ice Pirates, but with less ice and retarded robots.
This isn’t exactly a subtle movie, but the pacing is quick, and the actions do a good job mostly not making it a bunch of a CGI mishmash, (sometimes it is like the game Parcheesi, it’s a bit confusing), while laying in quite a bit of comedic cheese. Other than that, it’s basically just a precursor to the bigger Marvel narrative playing out. While it’s true to the latest filmatic trends of 20 years or so now where the main character is kind of a bumbling idiot and it’s his Diverse Companions that make the team really succeed, it still delivers a few good emotional jabs here and there. But good major film role for Chris Pratt as the Star-Lord, it’s still a fun action movie overall.
