I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Adam Sandler’s movies, but to be honest I haven’t seen a lot of them. Happy Gilmore did kinda surprise me for being a nice but slightly retarded comedy with grade-school level jokes, but to be fair I saw it for free because my buddy was a projectionist at the time and I had to kill 2 hours before he got off work. Bob Barker will always be cool in my book because of it, though. But before and after that he put out a few PG13 comedies that kinda just didn’t appeal to me at that point in my life. If I was in grade school? Maybe. So I’ve never watched this before, or even Billy Madison. It’s just retarded Sandler in different trappings. So I didn’t have high hopes going into this one. It ...still disappointed, even with the Ozzy.
Little Nicky (Sandler) is the runt of the litter when is comes to Satan’s three sons. A bit tarded after taking a shovel to the face from one of his brothers, he just kinda deals with it while adoring his father. But who would have thought Rodney Dangerfield was Satan’s dad? Basically a fish outta water story as Little Nicky is sent up to earth for the first time to try and capture his two bastard brothers before the Rule of Hell gets completely fercockled.
I can’t say this was complete shit. It has a few kinda funny bits, especially when it comes to the music thing and a talking dog. But overall, pretty much anyone can get the gist of what to expect from any particular Sandler comedy from the trailer, this is no different. Nice to see Harvey Keitel ham it up a bit as Satan, and even Quentin Tarantino as a blind priest who senses the evil. Carl Weathers in a nice small cameo in a shout-out to Happy Gilmore. And yes, plenty of SNL actors make appearances throughout. I do think Sandler can be funny, if given the right material, he’s pulled off some good dramatic roles now in his later years, allegedly. Maybe I’ll check out at some point in time. But after the shitshow of what Jack and Jill looks like? I’m not going near anything from this millennium for awhile, there’s better bad movies out there to watch first.
