This is a fantastic little drama. Does it take place solely on the moon, with only one guy? Basically. It gets...a little complicated. But interesting, daresay, intriguing premises going on; where does it take us? It’s a cool little path to go down. Or up. Because, you know, the moon. Can confirm, Appropriately titled.
In the near distant future, it turns out moon rocks are the new energy source, soakin up all kinds of rays. Gamma, Alpha and the elusive Helium rays. So mining operations are put in place to ship that shit back to earth. Pretty self-sufficient, though. All it takes is one dude and an A.I. robot appliance to cover the shit. Sam (in excellent role by Sam Rockwell) and Gerty the Kinda-Robot are approaching the end of Sam’s 3-year contract. He’s gettin a little flaky, though, that’s a long time in isolation, even with shitty wake-up music and hot sauce on your breakfast beans to keep you going. Plus those damn downed comlinks. Then, there’s a bit of a fuck-up, as there always is. And that makes things go…not as regularly scheduled.
This is a solid low-key sci-fi drama by Jones, who is the son of David Bowie, apparently. Does a good job here. Follows it with some other flicks (Source Code, was kinda alright sci-fi, a Warcraft movie or some shit? Huh? Whatever). Overall though, a convincing presentation of the isolation of the job, the psychological hardships it brings. And the fuckeries of what’s making it all go around in the first place, plus with kind of a little HAL 9000 vibe going on, but different. Because you know I don’t usually watch movies without at least a little bit of shenanigans. This one’s got some decent ones.
