Well damn! We got ourselves an H. P. Lovecraft anthology goin on here! And including not just Brian Yuzna, but Mfing Jeffrey Combs in the hotseat as one HPL himself! Complete with a Bruce Campbell chin! HOl.y. sHIt.! Too bad the rest of the movie is not quite that spectacular. Even confusing, frankly.
I will say the Jeffery Combs HPL framing to the stories here are well done, from the sets to the cinemaographies and such. And even the three stories themselves, some well done shootin. Shit, the dude that did Brotherhood of the Wolf did the first segment. Looks mostly good. But it and the third story by Yuzna? Really just “Inspired by” versus the actual “Cool Air” adaptation by Kaneko, which in itself is kind of a story that is, well, meh. But the last one by Yuzna is surprisingly not really Lovecraftian. Horrific? Yes. But considering he put this all together, kind of a turd on multiple levels, mainly on the script and plotpoints. Though I must say, Don “The Return of the Living Dead” Calfa does a good job with his role there. Odd addition overall though.
The framing device to the movie is what makes this. The stories themselves are well done I guess, but rather shite stories to choose in the first place. I repeat it because apparently I have no other good things to say about the film. Some sketchy early-day CGI here, for historical purposes. David Warner doing a good job in the Cold segment, and...yeah.
