VIDEO REVIEW

Ah, back in the days when movies really had the minimal plots and to allow for all the silly antics, skits, shenanigans and gags. And as always, a heart-felt message to tie it all together at the end. Except for the tragic boating accident that kills the two main leads. That’s not only unexpected, but kind of a bummer as the chick was kinda cute. That might have made a slightly more involving plot. This is not that story.

Summer arrives after high school graduation for Hoops and his buddy George. Neither have much for future prospects, so George gets his buddy to join him at his Gramma’s place in Nantucket for the Summer. One last Hurrah. And a young John Cuscack, Demi Moore, Booger, Bobcat Goldwaithe and even Neidermeyer are all thrown into the mix. Such drama. Such realism. Such Gravitas as the plot unfolds!

Yeah, this is as vanilla of an 80s young adult romcom as you can get. The underdog, the girl, the challenge, the rich kid foil. And the montages. Multiple. Montages. Cuz that’s how they rolled back then. To the cheeziest of music, of course. There is some ZZ Top at one point. Kind of the highlight here, really, at least musically. The rest is rather innocuous tripe that would be great to take your date to back in high school for the chance to get to second base. So much cheese.

Great Scenes: Not gonna lie, I can’t say I didn’t get a little choked up over the puppy reveal. Because, who doesn’t love puppies? Tied with the Godzilla stomping scene. Oh Godzilla, you are incorrigible!

Media Notes: There are some Fritz the Cat-style animations employed throughout that are actually pretty decent. Earned this one an extra beer for look.
