Dang. It’s odd how things align with movie-watchings here sometimes. I had 2 movies with 2 actors I don’t particularly care for on the queue this eve. But this was a good night. Eric Roberts in Runaway Train? Acceptable role, being the chump-ass chump he usually plays. But Ben Stiller? Damn. There’s Something About Mary is his first stopped-clock moment. I think this is his other, and directing it besides. So my drunken kudos to you, Ben Stiller, for making this happen. It is a fine actual comedic not-quite-full retard feather in your hat.
Modern industry Hollyweird actors and new ‘talent,’ all with their separate accomplishments, combined into a film adaptation of a renowned Viet Nam book story. Some of the actors are interesting choices for the roles in this dramatic interpretation. It totally isn’t ridiculous. At all. As it all plays out. Especially actor Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) in full pigmentation alterations and going full method actor. Holy Jeebus, so wrong it’s right. The over-dramatics are so thick but appropriate base to this cheese soup, with a side of cheese sammich.
From the first moment, I do like the full parody take on the “industry” that is fully embraced here. Crazy that the spoof commercial that opens it became reality with the W.A.P. (Wet Ass Pussy) songings of already a few years back now. Damn. Idiocracy has hit us full, and some people just don’t realize it yet. As least this jabs the thumb in the eye of the overall stupidity of Hollyweird with its own take. Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey, and even ass-hat Jack Black. Nick Nolte is a nice surprise, and, well, Les. Producer Extraordinaire. Nice nods to the war films Platoon and Apocalypse Now as major influences, obviously, while just being a downright retarded parody. And nicely produced. Lots of good-lookin explosions and shit, good helicopter shots and shit. So yeah, some good comedy and shit here, to accompany the industry eye-pokings.
