Is this the Season 3 of Deadwood of movies? I think it might be. Some good ideas here but it kinda seems like, shit, fuckit, we’re out.
While kinda returning to the horror thematics of Shaun of the Dead, this one adds in a little bit of sci-fi to the mix. Some old high school chums reunite for another go at the final pub crawl that didn’t quite complete the loop back in the day, at the insistence of the group leader King, to you know, revisit old times. Jeebus. I just realized the main character is named similar to the writer who also has atrocious endings. So fitting.
This is a hard review to write, considering how much I enjoy This Crew’s [Edgar, Simon and Nick] body of work going back to Spaced. Nice to see the progression in storytelling, cinematics, dorky humor and Bond actors. And this has some great stuff, don’t get me wrong. But it kinda fumbles it like a shitty Stephen King ending. Maybe it was in tribute, I don’t know. Some people on the interwebs can be like, aw, no, it was so meta, he meant it to be a shitty ending. Maybe. Maybe that was it, or that well just ran dry. It happens. Sad capper to the “coranetto trilogy” though. Great core concept, so I will absolutely give it props for that. I guess it’s just the overall tone of the story that rubs me the wrong way. The redemption arc at the end just seems hackneyed and lazy. I wasn’t necessarily expecting the happiest of endings, and not like he has some Shakespearian resolutions to his previous work. I dunno. This one just doesn’t sit well with me, even being the drunken movie reviewer that I am. Sure there’s some funny lines and ok action sequences. Damn, this is a hard review to write.
