Okay, so, this is not a fun crime caper escape movie. I don’t know why I thought it was going in, it was a bit of a random pick, but with Super Troopers 3 just hitting, I’m like, yeah, Brian Cox, that dude has great comedic shit in that. This? Not comedic. At all. In fact, it’s kinda ugly, and kinda prison-rapey. But there is a good escape that goes down, so the title does, in fact, apply. I think.
Frank Perry, the old guy in the brutal prison systems of England. A lot of different hardcore criminals from the Isles skulking about. Mostly Creepy. Not good. But he’s left to his own, has a few non-rapey friends. The new batch comes in, he gets a new punk bunkmate. It’s not exactly a Tool video, but kinda. Not from Frank, but, well, yeah. There’s a lot of not-good people. It’s why they are in prison. Things play out, making Frank realize he’s got to get the fuck outta there.
This is told through a lot of either flashbacks or flashforwards, a bit hard to determine, but it does a good job going through the escape and the events leading up to it. And Brian Cox does good as the main lead as he deals with the different inmates and the situation plays out. Damian Lewis as the absolute fkn creepy Boss Prisoner? Yeah. Bad news there. Damn. Good role by Liam Cunnhingham, one of the only “good” guys from Game of Thrones, and mostly decent roles from Dominic “Preacher” Cooper and Joseph Fiennes. It’s an ugly but decent drama as it plays out. I dunno, for a random pick for my “Escape” theme for the month, it fit the bill. But damn, no lighthearted banter here. At all. So just know that going in.
