Theoretical Physics. It’s a helluva thing. Did this movie need to be 3 hours long to explore that? Probably not. I know, it’s hard to pack in as much as you can into a biography on somebody born over 120 years ago, plus give us the reason why Los Alamos, New Mexico was put on the map. Coulda used a few more humorous bits though instead of the reference to that Breaking Bad Heisenberg guy up in Albuquerque. But I guess this is from the guy that gave us the “Why So Serious?” Batman meme. I think. I dunno, I never read the comics so he might of cribbed that.
Oppenheimer, and the bombs he designed and the women who may or may not have loved him for it, but he was honestly a bit of a weird skinny dude. At least he isn’t a homo, but the ability to read Sanskrit does kinda makes him a little gay. A Smart cookie though, taking the abstract and putting together a team to make it a reality. And then there’s the other half of the movie involving the investigations of suspected Communisms. Why was that even a thing, not like it’s gonna come back to haunt us or anythi...aw DAMMIT.
If nothing else, Nolan can take some concepts that might be a little dry otherwise and turn it into an at least somewhat interesting narrative. Some cool insights into history here surrounding one of the biggest secret government projects ever pulled off...that we know of. And how much is truth? I’m sure some here and there, but dramatacised for our cinematic enjoyments. Cillian Murphy seems to do an okay job playing a guy that, absolutely, operated on a different level, so the Keanu Reeves Acting Filter is appropriate here. But Matt Damon? Really? They do offset that a bit with Ajax from The Warriors (James Remar), and does eventually show us some explosions. And apparently no CGI for that, all practical shooting, and it does come across as genuine, so kudos to Nolan there. Bold combination of science and politics here that might not be everybody’s cup of tea, the movie was still nominated for 13 Oscars, won seven of em. Must’ve been a slow movie year. [Checks list…] Confirmed, yeah, what a load of crap in the aftermath of the Coof shutdowns. Sheesh.
