This is Zemeckis’s second film, and you know what? It’s awesome. Sure, he went on to direct a Lot of big movies (Romancing the Stone, Forrest Gump, Cast Away) including the Back to the Futures, but this? This one is an overlooked gem, such great comedicisms dealt out here.
Rudy is more than just your average used car salesman. Turns out, he has eyes on the bigger picture. Politician, as state senator. He just needs enough cash to “qualify” to enter the race. He will do pretty much anything to make his commissions so he can jump into larger circles of lying bastards. He’s just...good at it. Go figure. He just needs to get people on the lot. But then the complications rear up, as they tend to do. And he applies his Total Skillsets to make sure he can get those sales. By any pretty damn hilarious means possible.
I always had an indescribable appreciation for this movie. It’s not a blockbuster. Didn’t make a ton of money. But it’s got a level of comedy and ridiculous scenarios that you can’t help but dig it more and more as it plays out. Doesn’t hurt to have Kurt Russell as the star, his first main role after breaking out of those early Disney Days movies he got a start in, plus with some of the best superstitious antics and face expressionings by Gerrit Graham. Jim the mechanic? Pure Gold. And Jack Warden in dual roles is appropriately played out. But then, there’s the kicker. Toby. Not saying the best character ever to grace the screens, but possibly one of the best acted ones. Fkn Toby, man. Not even given the best lines, still nails it. Every. Single. Time. Overall, It’s a fun ride.
